Our mission for April is The Neighbors’ Place, and their mission is simple: “People Helping People.” The Neighbors’ Place is a community center that, according to their website, provides “a hand up to residents of Marathon County and the surrounding communities” by providing various services and programs “(free of charge) to those who need them.”
This assistance includes a food bank and pantry, community gardens, the Wheels Again program, and a community learning center. Their food pantry is the largest in Marathon county, and their facility, with a big “walk–in refrigerator and freezer,” can store perishable as well as nonperishable items.
The gardens consist of two sites, one maintained by volunteers and the other divided into plots where applicants are empowered to grow their own food. The annual yield from these gardens provides “thousands of pounds of fresh produce to Marathon County families.”
The Wheels Again program refurbishes donated bicycles, which provide those in need “with a way to get to work safely and reliably.” The organization also holds community events, such as health presentations, educational games, blood pressure screenings, and cooking classes.
